Chiropractic care focuses on how your spine, joints, and muscles move and how that movement connects to how you feel. Our beginner guide explains what a chiropractor does, what the evidence supports, and what to expect on a first visit.
Read the beginner guideChiropractic care centers on the spine and the joints, muscles, and nerves around it, and on how their movement relates to how you feel. Here is a plain-language look at the ideas behind it and what the evidence does and does not say.
The spine is a stack of small bones called vertebrae, cushioned by discs and held together by muscles and ligaments. When a joint moves less freely than it should, the area can feel stiff or sore. Chiropractors assess how each segment moves and where motion feels restricted.
An adjustment is a controlled, usually quick movement applied to a joint, often by hand. Many people hear a soft pop, which is simply gas releasing from the joint fluid. The goal is to improve how the joint moves and to ease discomfort, not to force anything out of place.
Research suggests that spinal manipulation can help some people with short term low back pain, neck pain, and certain headaches, often alongside exercise and staying active. Results vary from person to person, and it is not a cure. Always talk with a licensed provider about your own situation.
